On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the students of our dojo stepped off the familiar mat of the training floor and onto the shifting sands of Santa Monica Beach. Gathered near Tower 28 at the end of Ocean Park Blvd, we left behind the mirrors and climate control of our modern indoor dojo to engage in one of the oldest, most powerful customs in classical martial arts: training directly in nature.
While an outdoor training day might look like a fun weekend escape to an outside observer, this practice is deeply rooted in the core philosophy of traditional Goju-Ryu Seiwa-Kai.

The Legacy of Nature Training
In traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate, martial artists regularly traveled to the mountains, trained under freezing waterfalls (Misogi), or stood against crashing ocean tides.
Why? Because nature completely strips away pretense.
When you train on a flat, predictable indoor mat, your balance is guaranteed. But when you stand on wet, sinking sand, your stance (Dachi) must adapt instantly. Your root must become deeper, your core must engage completely, and your awareness must expand to anticipate the unpredictable push and pull of the shoreline.

Standing calf-deep in the ocean waves completely changes how you execute power. You aren’t just moving your muscles; you are learning to harmonize with massive external forces. This direct sensory experience teaches classical karate training that simply cannot be replicated inside a building:
-
True Rooted Stances: Sinking into the sand forces a literal connection to the earth, dropping your center of gravity (Hara).
-
Unwavering Focus: Blocking out the sound of crashing waves, seagulls, and onlookers forces a razor-sharp mental calm.
-
Resilience: Powering through cold water and heavy, wet clothes builds a gritty, unyielding spirit.
Transitioning to the Grass: Power & Partner Drills
After testing our balance against the shifting tide, the session shifted up the shoreline to the grass under the shade of the iconic Santa Monica palm trees.
Transitioning from the unstable sand to the firm grass allowed the team to dial up the explosive power. Here, the focus turned toward heavy impact drills, precise technical mechanics, and interactive applications.

We even brought the heavy training bags out to the park, challenging students to maintain the structural integrity of their techniques without the aid of indoor flooring.
Training outdoors also strips away the typical class boundaries. On the grass, our advanced black belts, adult practitioners, and the energetic youth from our kids’ programs all worked side-by-side.
Watching our youngest students find inspiration by watching the seniors sprint, kick, and drill next to them is exactly what makes our dojo community so unique. It embodies the true spirit of traditional karate training tips: passing down knowledge through living example.
A Shared Journey
Martial arts is ultimately an individual path of self-discovery, but it is forged alongside an authentic community. Pushing through the intense physical demands of an outdoor beach session breaks down ego and builds an unbreakable bond between our students.

Thank you to every student and family member who stepped onto the sand, faced the tide, and brought their absolute best energy to Tower 28. You carried the true, unyielding spirit of traditional Goju-Ryu Seiwa-Kai with you!
