Whether you’re exploring kids karate classes for your child or looking to step onto the mat yourself as an adult, choosing a dojo means finding a structure that challenges, inspires, and matches your skill level. At Goju-Ryu Seiwa-Kai Karate of LA, we run parallel curriculums meticulously tailored to different stages of martial arts development. If you have any questions about our specific programs, you can always contact our West LA dojo team directly.
Building Focus, Agility, & Mindfulness: Kids Karate Classes
Our kids karate classes focus entirely on channeling natural high energy into focused coordination, athletic control, and confidence. Led by senior instructors like Senpai John Dean, each session in The K.I.C.K. Crew youth program launches with a dynamic warm-up built around critical core calisthenics, functional mobility, and coordination stretches.
From there, the class shifts directly to foundational kihon drills, blending blocks, punches, and traditional kicks. Forms training introduces students to technical traditional katas like Gekisai Dai Ichi and Gekisai Dai Ni. We also host seminars, welcoming guest martial artists like Sensei Michael, an expert Aikido instructor, to expand our students’ appreciation for traditional Japanese martial arts culture. We cap off our physical training with interactive, safe distance drills and target work to sharpen reflexes, build physical agility, and teach practical teamwork.
Finally, because true martial arts is as much about mental discipline as it is physical strength, we close our youth sessions with a dedicated mindfulness and breathing exercise. Utilizing traditional instruments like the singing bowl, our students learn how to lower their heart rates, quiet their minds, and transition from high-energy physical training to a state of calm, centered focus—a skill they can carry off the mats and into the classroom.

Strength, Lineage, and Detail: Adult Classes
Our adult program dials up physical intensity while diving deep into sophisticated, specialized applications. Classes open with a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) protocol designed to optimize cardiovascular endurance, functional core stability, and flexibility.
We emphasize deep stance stability, challenging students with detailed kihon drills performed within shiko-dachi (horse stance) to cultivate root power. Traditional kata practice forms a major component of the curriculum, with individual guidance from Vassie Shihan focusing on specific testing katas including:
- Gekisai Dai Ichi, Gekisai Dai Ni
- Saifa
- Tensho & Sanchin
This attention to detail provides a highly specialized environment tailored to individual growth. We round out classes with controlled, light kumite (sparring) to hone spatial awareness, quick reflexes, and technique execution.
