At Goju-Ryu Seiwa-Kai Karate of LA, our traditional karate training is deeply rooted in heritage, discipline, and constant self-improvement. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the very first time or you are a seasoned practitioner, every class is designed to challenge your focus and physical conditioning.
To truly understand Goju-Ryu, one must look at how we structure our training around the three essential pillars of karate.
1. Kihon (Basics) in Traditional Karate Training
Every great martial artist relies on a flawless foundation. Our training always begins with challenging warm-ups to prepare the body, followed by intensive kihon drills.
Practicing various combinations of blocks, punches, kicks, and stances is the ultimate test of focus, balance, and physical conditioning. Through repetition, these fundamental movements move from conscious effort to muscle memory.
2. Kata (Forms)
Kata is the heart of traditional karate. It is a choreographed sequence of movements representing a fight against imaginary opponents, allowing us to practice techniques with maximum power and precision.
In our dojo, we dive deep into the technical focus of traditional Goju-Ryu katas, including:
- Saifa
- Seiyunchin
- Shisochin
- Tensho
- Sanchin
During these sessions, our instruction focuses heavily on breaking down proper timing, fluid movement, and—most importantly—appropriate kime (inner intensity and focus).

3. Kumite (Sparring)
The final pillar of traditional karate training is where technique meets live application. Kumite drills are conducted with high energy, vigor, and strict control. Sparring allows karateka to apply the distance, timing, and reflexes they have built in kihon and kata within a safe, collaborative environment.
