A Deeper Connection and Shared Purpose
For Mike and me, training in Goju-Ryu karate together has become one of the most meaningful parts of our relationship. In our 50s, we have discovered that sharing this passion gives us much more than a way to stay fit – it gives us a deeper connection and a shared purpose.
Carrying Dojo Lessons into Everyday Life
When Mike and I step onto the dojo floor together, we leave the distractions of everyday life behind. Karate teaches us mindfulness, discipline, respect, patience, and focus, and we find that those lessons naturally carry into our personal life. Our training helps us communicate better, support one another, and approach challenges with greater balance. There is also a spiritual side to karate that gives us a sense of grounding and structure as a couple.
“There is something uniquely enjoyable about being able to challenge each other, throw a few punches and kicks, laugh about it, and then get right back to practicing.”
Playful Energy, Sparring, and Mutual Motivation
And then there is the fun. We genuinely enjoy training together, especially sparring and practicing techniques on each other. There is something uniquely enjoyable about being able to challenge each other, throw a few punches and kicks, laugh about it, and then get right back to practicing. It keeps our relationship playful and active.
We also motivate each other to stay healthy and strong. When one of us feels tired or needs encouragement, the other is there to lift us up and keep us moving forward.
Becoming Stronger Together
For Mike and me, Goju-Ryu is more than martial arts. It has become part of how we connect, grow, laugh, challenge ourselves, and support each other. We are not only training together – we are becoming stronger together, both inside and outside the dojo.
